Get your healthiest summer hair yet

The weather is heating up, the air is getting drier –and so is our hair. So, how do we keep it looking and feeling healthy?

If you’re a sucker for the beach or the pool like myself, there are a few things you can do to counter the salt and chlorine. Wetting your hair with tap water before a swim fills the cuticles with clean water so they won’t absorb so much chlorine or salt. And always flush pool or ocean water off after a dip, so it doesn’t dry in your hair.

I'll also toss some Davines Nourishing Keratin Sealer in my pool or beach bag to apply after spending time in the water. It's a beautiful leave-in treatment that nourishes, protects and also strengthens, helping to prevent split ends.

A change in seasons also means switching up the products we use. Think of it like skincare. If you carried your winter skincare regimen through to summer, you’d feel weighed down and clogged up. The same goes for what’s on your head.

Like skin, it’s much easier to ensure the health of your hair through prevention, rather than repair. A big part of this is UV protection. I love Davines Oi Milk, a leave-in treatment that conditions, adds shine, and contains antioxidants to protect against the harsh Aussie sun. Another great product in the Oi range is the Hair Butter. It’s super nourishing and deeply transformative (especially for curly hair, which can need more love). Use it as a treatment in the shower. You just take a little dollop, work it through shampooed hair and let it marinate for 10 minutes. Both products smell gorgeous, too.

A lot of people comment on the health of my long hair and ask which products I use. The truth is, the things I don’t do are just as important. Firstly, I skip the highlights over summer. I know it’s tempting to lighten our hair colour for the sunny weather, but highlights strip your hair. Instead, opt for a gloss. While it doesn’t lighten your hair, it adds shine, so it looks and feels healthier. If you absolutely have to get highlights, go for less. Your hair will thank you.

I also don’t heat-style my hair in warmer months. I just let it do its thing. It can feel scary at first, but it’s lovely to embrace your natural hair. A lot of people are concerned about frizz, but my hair is frizzy all the time – and I get so many compliments on it!

At risk of sounding like a mum, your own health and hydration play a huge part, too. If you’re healthy, you’re supporting your hair health.

With that in mind, as long as you have a good haircut, maintain it with frequent trims, and let it dry naturally, the health of your hair will shine through.
